McQuaid Basketball Hopes to Win Second Title in a Row

The McQuaid Basketball team after the big sectional title win against U PREP, March 3, 2018, Rochester N.Y, Blue Cross Arena. After starting 4-7, the Knights turned their season around to win their first sectional game in 15 years.

After winning sectionals last year, how will McQuaid basketball perform this year against the tough teams in Section V?  Will it be more of the same, or a disappointing season for the Knights. With winning sectionals last year, the Knights have a lot to prove that they are actually the best team in Section V, and that last year was not a fluke.

Last year’s sectional title win was phenomenal. With everybody firing on all cylinders, it was the game to watch. Senior Josh Purcell was named to the Section V All tournament team, while senior Anthony Iglesia was named tournament MVP.

With both of those key players gone this year along with four other seniors, who will step up? Will McQuaid make it to the sectional finals again?

Ten players are returning, including the starters senior Connor Zamiara, along with juniors Jermaine Taggart and Kobe Long. With a lot of young talent that did not graduate last year, the McQuaid basketball team is looking toward a bright future and a good basketball season.

With two of the five starters gone, returning Junior Kobe Long weighs in on how they will play without  Anthony and Josh in the starting lineup.

“We are coming together as a team and we have been blowing out teams in fall league, and if we keep going down this road, I think we will be all right,” said Kobe.

Even though McQuaid is a great team, they will have some tough competition.

Junior Christian Blatter talks about who will be the toughest team to beat.

“Bishop Kearney is going to be really tough competition because they acquired Miles Monchecourt from Pittsford and Katrell from Aquinas,” said Christian. “The combination of those two are going to be really hard to beat.”

Bishop Kearney who always puts out a stellar team looks like the team to beat this year.  After McQuaid beat them 82 to 81 in a hard-fought game last year, they’re going to be out for revenge.

With the junior varsity basketball Knights going 14-4 last year, the Knights hope to have a sectional title run season with talented players coming back to varsity, and some talented players coming up from the JV team.
