In a slow, low-scoring game the Knights prevailed to beat their rival Aquinas Institute Li’l Irish. Aquinas scored first off a broken coverage play by the McQuaid defense to make the score 7-0 Lil Irish. This score remained until half time.
In the second half McQuaid came out looking determined. On the second drive of the second half for the Knights, senior running back John Harding punched it in to make the score 7-7. After a hard fought defensive battle for the rest of the 3rd quarter and most of the 4th, McQuaid’s back up running back junior Allen Nesmith broke the tie and gave the Knights a 14-7 lead with 5 minutes left in the game.
The Li’l Irish fired back with their own long, methodical drive, taking the it all the way down to the last play of the game, where their scrambling quarterback found a wide-open receiver in the endzone to make it 13-14.
Aquinas made the huge decision to forgo the extra point and go for 2 to win the game. The gutsy call, however, did not pay off. The Knights defense held strong as they have all year and won the game 14-13 for a great finish against their rival Aquinas.
