Aftermath of Hurricane Maria: McQuaid Jesuit’s Chance to Step in

Mr. Patrick Flaherty

The abundance of supplies donated by various students and faculty at McQuaid Jesuit.

After all the destruction and sorrow brought to Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria, the McQuaid Jesuit community stepped in to show their compassion as they donated necessary goods and love to help the Puerto Ricans survive in their destroyed environment.

When the people of Puerto Rico needed help, McQuaid Jesuit came to the call and gave them as much support as possible by partnering with the company InterVol to give our students the chance to donate the necessary goods.

InterVol, which is responsible for helping many communities around the world, gave McQuaid students the chance to help our brothers and sisters down in Puerto Rico.

“I had worked at InterVol over the summer, and they had asked us if Christian and I would start an InterVol club,” senior Sean O’Connor said. O’Connor and his fellow leader Christian Mathews, the two seniors that helped run the fundraiser, were given the perfect opportunity to create a system of bringing compassionate fundraisers to McQuaid, and they did the job diligently.

Both O’Connor and Matthews were very pleased with the number of donations collected during drive. “There were two different pickups, and the boxes were large enough and gave enough supplies to Puerto Rico,” they said.

There was a significant response in what the McQuaid students and community gave during the drive.  The needed supplies were acquired as everyone showed their compassion and willingness to give the people of Puerto Rico what they needed to survive in a time of disaster.

The heart and soul of the students of McQuaid really carried this drive as they tried their best to deliver what was needed for the unfortunate people of Puerto Rico when they needed it most.
