The McQuaid Jesuit baseball field was long overdue for an upgrade. The installation of a new turf field not only brings an enhanced playing surface for the team, but will also bring a much better atmosphere for the fans.
The old field consisted of grass and dirt, and the new field is full synthetic turf. The new turf provides a better draining system, no ridges or bumps in the infield or outfield, and a better feel for the players to reduce landing on an incline or decline and potentially getting injured.
The Simba Society is an integral part of McQuaid Athletics and, with the new turf, watching games will be much more pleasing to the fans and a much better experience for the players.
Athletic Director Mr. Jon Matt is very excited about the new field.
“It was long overdue and something we have wanted for the school and program for the past five-plus years,” Mr. Matt said. “The Turf is FieldTurf, and now matches the turf on Seymour Field. The field will receive a once-a-year full maintenance and cleaning. In addition, we have a groomer that will be used on the field.”
According to Mr. Matt, while the final invoices have not yet come in, the price tag for the new field is around $1.4 million. Construction was completed last September through November by DiFiore Construction.
Senior varsity baseball player Conor Forkey also has some input on the new schedule. Forkey is an infielder on the team.
“Since my freshman year, I have played about 5 games at McQuaid. Boosting this season to 12, the competitive atmosphere will only boost [other teams’] desire to play the Knights,” Forkey said.
At the end of the day–turf or no turf–people are going to come watch if the team is good, so the Baseball Knights have to do their job and win.
